We are going to take a look at Zechariah chapter 12, where the prophet unveils a vision of Jerusalem’s destiny, a picture marked by divine protection, global significance, and ultimate restoration. This chapter resonates deeply with the current state of Israel in November 2024, reflecting both fulfillment and anticipation of prophecy.
The Burden of Jerusalem
The chapter opens with these powerful words:
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people around about… And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces.” Zechariah 12:2-3, KJV.
Today, Jerusalem remains at the epicentre of global attention. Nations continue to wrestle with its status, whether politically, diplomatically, or religiously. The recent tensions surrounding Jerusalem echo the prophet’s words. It is a “burdensome stone” not only for its immediate neighbours but also for international powers attempting to influence its future. The prophetic language here captures the enduring centrality of Jerusalem in world affairs.
Divine Protection Amid Peril
Zechariah describes God’s intervention:
“In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” Zechariah 12:8 Modern Israel, surrounded by hostile nations and facing internal and external pressures, has experienced numerous conflicts. Despite overwhelming odds, the nation’s survival and resilience stand as a testament to what many believers see as divine protection. The advanced technologies and strategies that bolster Israel’s defence may be viewed as tools through which God’s hand operates, fulfilling His promises to preserve His chosen people.

A Call to Spiritual Revival
Perhaps most striking is the prophecy of spiritual awakening:
“And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications, and they shall look upon me, whom they have pierced…” Zechariah 12:10.
This verse points toward a future moment of repentance and recognition of the Messiah. In today’s context, while Israel thrives as a nation, there remains a spiritual hunger and a search for identity. Many see the growing number of Messianic Jews and the global attention on the Messiah’s role as indicators that this prophecy is nearing fulfilment.
Zechariah 12 in 2024
As we observe the political turmoil, the alliances forming around Israel, and the escalating tensions in the Middle East, Zechariah 12 feels increasingly relevant. The chapter underscores God’s sovereignty over history and His unwavering covenant with Israel. It also serves as a reminder for believers to watch and pray as prophetic events unfold.
Jerusalem’s story is far from over. As we look to the Bible, Zechariah 12 provides both a roadmap and a reassurance: God’s purposes for Israel and the world will ultimately prevail.
As we reflect on the events unfolding in our world, especially in the Middle East, let us take comfort in the unshakable truth of God’s promises. The Bible assures us that Israel will never again be uprooted or destroyed. In Amos 9:15, the Lord declares, “I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them.” Despite the challenges and conflicts that arise, God’s hand of protection is steadfast over His chosen people. He who watches over Israel “will neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4). Let us trust in His sovereignty, knowing that His covenant with Israel is eternal and His word is unchanging.
To this very day, miracles are still happening, but the majority of people do not recognise them because of their lack of belief.
Here are some scriptures that tell us that Almighty God is protecting Israel and will continue to do so until the return of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Zechariah 2:8
For this is what the Lord Almighty says: After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye.
Deuteronomy 32:11-12
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him.
Deuteronomy 33:29
Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights.
Isaiah 46:4b
I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you, and I will rescue you.
Psalm 121:4-5; 7
Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you — the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life.
